Snipe Fleet 103

Snipe Fleet Captain
Tom Lee

We Snipes sail two or three one-design races each Sunday afternoon from early May through mid-October and some sail the Thursday night handicap races, too.   We hang out after the races for beer, yummies and stories, some true.  Off-season we gather monthly for pot luck parties.  It’s a very sociable fleet.

Two people sail the boat: a skipper and one crew.  A wide range of sailors enjoy sailing Snipes: men, women, kids, novices and experts.  Most of us only sail races at our club, including the annual regatta we host, but some travel to regattas at other clubs, even out of the country.  The Snipe is raced in active fleets around the world.

The Snipe fleet was the first at Newport when the club was founded in 1936.   The purchase prices of competitive boats in our fleet range from $1200 to $5500, but if you want to be a national champion, you can spend more than $10,000 for a new one.  Here are the specs.

Specifications:

LOA 15' 6"
LWL 13' 6"
Beam 5' 0"
Draft up/dn 6"/ 39"
Weight 381 lbs.
Sail Area (main & jib) 128 sq. ft.

Briody Regatta for 2010

On August 21-22, we will welcome sailors from other clubs for the Briody Memorial Regatta.  Last year we had fifteen boats and two days of great racing.  Unfortunately, the out-of-towners usually trample us locals, but we learn a lot and have a great time.

The regatta started in 1936 to honor untimely deceased Snipe sailor Francis M. Briody of Lockport, NY.  For the past two decades the venue has been Newport YC.  This will be the 74th year is has been sailed -- one of the most venerable sports events in the country.

Several people who don’t currently sail Snipes have helped run this regatta in the past and surely will again.  If you would like to help or if you want more information, contact Regatta Chairman, Norm Dahl (585-872-5485).
